The European Movement in Denmark continues to condemn the military attack on Ukraine on 24th of February 2022. We call on Russia to respect the Charter of the United Nations and the principles of territorial integrity stipulated within international law.

About two months after its illegal attack we are deeply concerned about reports of Russia’s apparent lack of respect for the Geneva convention. The convention does not permit the targeting of innocent civilians that are current trapped in the conflict. In many cases civilians are not even allowed evacuation from towns under heavy bombardment. This has resulted in daily losses and hardships on a massive scale not seen in Europe since World War II.

In this most unfortunate situation, the Danish European Movement is nevertheless happy to observe the strong European and Transatlantic solidarity with Ukraine at all levels. Heads of state and government within the EU, the United States and elsewhere have readily agreed to enforce severe sanctions against relevant decision-makers in Russia. Also, individual communities and citizens of Europe are spontaneously opening their homes to the sudden influx of large numbers of refugees from Ukraine, the large majority of which are women, children, and elderly.

Like many others, our movement does not believe this aggression is acceptable. We call upon Russia to immediately halt its attack on Ukraine and take immediate measures to protect the affected civilian population.
